Converting recipes for an air fryer

An air fryer is a compact, powerful convection oven: a fan blows hot air quickly around food in a small chamber, so it cooks and crisps faster than a full-size oven. The common rule for adapting a conventional oven recipe is to lower the temperature by about 25 °F (15 °C) and cut the time by about 20%. A recipe at 400 °F for 25 minutes becomes about 375 °F for 20 minutes; 200 °C for 30 minutes becomes about 185 °C for 24 minutes. For the best results, don't overcrowd the basket, use a light spray of oil for crispness, and shake or turn the food halfway. Start checking at about three-quarters of the time, because the first attempt at any recipe is a test run. Going the other way, raise the temperature by about 25 °F and allow about a quarter more time in a conventional oven. Honest limits: air fryers vary a lot in power and basket size. The rule works best for chips, wings, nuggets, roasted vegetables and reheating; cakes, batters and large joints behave differently. Always cook meat to a safe internal temperature. The oven temperature converter and the slow cooker converter are related.
