Alcohol Units Calculator
UK units, US standard drinks, grams and calories for the drinks you had.
About this tool
Add each drink from the list of common serves, such as a pint of 4% beer, a 175 ml glass of wine or a 25 ml single spirit, or choose Custom and enter any volume and strength. Set how many of each you had and whether the list covers a week or a single day. The calculator totals UK units, US standard drinks, grams of pure alcohol and the calories from alcohol, and colours the units green or red against the guideline.
How alcohol units are worked out
A UK unit is 10 ml, or 8 g, of pure alcohol. Units = volume in ml ร ABV % รท 1,000. A pint (568 ml) of 4% beer is 2.3 units, a 175 ml glass of 13% wine is 2.3 units, a 750 ml bottle of 13% wine is 9.8 units and a 25 ml single of 40% spirit is exactly 1 unit. A US standard drink is 14 g of alcohol, about 1.75 UK units, which is a 12 oz 5% beer, a 5 oz 12% wine or a 1.5 oz shot of 40% spirit. The UK Chief Medical Officers' low-risk guideline is no more than 14 units a week for men and women, spread over three or more days. US dietary guidelines suggest no more than 2 drinks a day for men and 1 for women, and both say drinking less is better for health. Alcohol has about 7 kcal per gram, so the 14-unit limit alone is around 780 kcal before any mixers or sugar. Honest limits: this is general information, not medical advice. Never use units to decide whether you can drive; the only safe amount before driving is none. The blood alcohol calculator estimates BAC over time and the calorie calculator puts the calories in context. How daily calorie needs are calculated โ BMR, activity multipliers and what a deficit means explains daily energy needs.
