Initials avatars
Initials avatars, the coloured circle with someone's initials, are used by email clients, chat tools, project managers and websites as a default profile picture when there's no photo. They're simple, consistent and readable at small sizes. This generator takes the first and last name's initials (or the first two letters of a single name), centres them on a circle, rounded square or square, and lets you pick a font and colours. With 'colour from the name', the background is chosen from a palette by hashing the name, so the same person always gets the same colour, which is useful for a team page or a set of placeholder avatars. Previews at 160, 64 and 32 pixels show how it looks in a list or chat. Download a PNG at 128 to 1,024 pixels for profile uploads, or an SVG that stays sharp at any size, or copy the SVG code for a website. White text on a mid-to-dark background gives the best contrast. Honest limits: non-Latin names work but depend on your device's fonts, which the PNG captures as rendered in your browser. The favicon generator and the colour palette generator are related.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make an initials avatar?
Type the name, choose the shape and colours, then download a PNG or SVG.
Will the same name always get the same colour?
Yes, with 'colour from the name' turned on; the colour is derived from the name.
What size should a profile picture be?
512 × 512 pixels suits most sites; download larger if needed.
Is SVG or PNG better?
SVG stays sharp at any size and is ideal for websites; PNG is accepted by almost every profile upload.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. Everything is made in your browser, and nothing you type is stored or sent.
