Base58 Encoder / Decoder

Encode and decode Base58 and Base58Check (Bitcoin, IPFS) online.

About this tool

Choose to encode or decode, text or hex data, and the Bitcoin (also used by IPFS and Solana) or Flickr alphabet. Tick Base58Check to add a 4-byte checksum when encoding and verify it when decoding. Swap moves the output back to the input.

How Base58 works

Base58 represents bytes using 58 characters: the digits 1โ€“9 and letters aโ€“z and Aโ€“Z, but without 0 (zero), O (capital o), I (capital i) and l (lower-case L), which are easily confused when reading or typing. It also avoids + and /, so a Base58 string can be selected with a double-click and used in URLs. The bytes are treated as one big number and converted to base 58, and each leading zero byte becomes a leading '1'. Bitcoin uses it for legacy addresses and WIF private keys, IPFS for CIDv0 hashes (Qmโ€ฆ), and Solana for addresses. Base58Check appends the first four bytes of a double SHA-256 hash of the data, so a mistyped address is detected rather than sending funds to the wrong place. 'Hello World!' encodes to 2NEpo7TZRRrLZSi2U, and the tool verifies the checksum of real addresses. Honest limits: Base58 is an encoding, not encryption. Never enter real private keys or seed phrases into websites. This tool runs only in your browser and sends nothing, but it's a habit worth keeping. The Base64 encoder, the Base32 converter and the number base converter are related.

Frequently asked questions

What characters does Base58 use?

1โ€“9, Aโ€“Z and aโ€“z without 0, O, I and l, which are easily confused.

What is Base58Check?

Base58 with a 4-byte checksum from a double SHA-256 hash, used by Bitcoin addresses to catch typos.

Is Base58 encryption?

No. It's a reversible encoding, so anyone can decode it.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is stored or sent.
