Bowling Score Calculator

Score a ten-pin game frame by frame with strikes, spares and the tenth.

About this tool

Type your rolls using X for a strike, / for a spare, - for a miss and digits for pins, with or without spaces, or tap the buttons. The scoresheet fills in each frame's marks and running total as you go and shows the score so far or the final score. Undo removes the last roll, and the tool tells you if a roll isn't possible.

How bowling is scored

A ten-pin game has ten frames, with two balls per frame to knock down ten pins. In an open frame, you score the pins knocked down. A spare, all ten pins with two balls, scores 10 plus the pins on your next ball. A strike, all ten with the first ball, scores 10 plus your next two balls. Bonuses are why the running total sometimes waits a frame or two to be filled in. In the tenth frame, a spare earns one bonus ball and a strike earns two, so a game is always ten frames. Twelve strikes in a row is a perfect 300, nine pins in every frame with no spares is 90, and a spare in every frame with 5 on each first ball is 150. The sample game, X 7/ 9- X X 81 9/ X 72 XX8, scores 180. Honest limits: this follows standard ten-pin rules; candlepin, duckpin and nine-pin are scored differently, and league handicaps aren't included. The scoreboard tracks scores for other games and the dice roller is handy for game night.
