Brick Calculator

Bricks or blocks for a wall with joints, single or double skin, waste and mortar.

About this tool

Choose a UK or US brick or block, single or double skin, then enter the wall's length and height, the area of any openings and a waste percentage. The calculator shows the number of bricks or blocks, the count per square metre or square foot, the wall area, the mortar volume and the number of mortar bags based on the yield you enter.

How many bricks are in a wall

Each brick covers its face plus one mortar joint in each direction. A UK brick is 215 × 65 mm, so with 10 mm joints it covers 225 × 75 mm, about 59 bricks per square metre of single-skin wall. The trade rounds this to 60. A 6 m wall 1.8 m high is 10.8 m², which takes 640 bricks, or 672 with 5% for breakages and cuts. A double-skin (one-brick-thick) wall doubles that. A 440 × 215 mm block needs about 10 per square metre, and a US modular brick with ⅜ in joints about 6.9 per square foot. Mortar is the wall's volume minus the bricks, roughly 0.018 m³ per square metre of half-brick wall, or about 0.2 m³ for the example wall. Enter the yield printed on your mortar bag to count bags. Honest limits: frogged bricks laid frog-up take more mortar, reclaimed bricks need more waste allowance, and walls over about a metre need proper footings, piers and possibly approval. The concrete calculator sizes the footing, the area calculator measures gable walls and the unit converter switches units.
