Business Model Canvas
The nine-block business model canvas online, printable and saved as you type.
About this tool
Give your business or idea a name and fill in the nine blocks, one point per line. Each block has a prompt question. On a computer the blocks sit in the classic canvas layout, and on a phone they stack in the order to fill them. The status line counts the blocks you have completed. You can copy the canvas as Markdown, download it as a .md file, or print a one-page canvas for a workshop. It saves in your browser as you type.
How to fill in a business model canvas
The Business Model Canvas, created by Alexander Osterwalder and published by Strategyzer under a Creative Commons licence, shows on one page how an organisation creates, delivers and captures value. The right side covers customers. Customer segments are who you serve, and value propositions are what problem you solve for them and why you. Channels are how customers find, buy and receive what you offer, customer relationships are how you keep them, and revenue streams are what they pay for and how. The left side is the engine: key activities, key resources and key partners, and the cost structure they create. Start with customer segments and value propositions, because everything else depends on them. A lunch-subscription business, for example, serves city-centre office workers with healthy, zero-waste lunches delivered to their desk. It sells through office partnerships and Instagram, earns from weekly subscriptions and corporate plans, and runs on a commercial kitchen, cargo bikes and a head chef. Treat every entry as an assumption to test with real customers. The SWOT analysis weighs strengths and threats, the break-even calculator tests the numbers and the startup runway calculator shows how long the money lasts.
Frequently asked questions
What are the nine blocks of the business model canvas?
Customer segments, value propositions, channels, customer relationships, revenue streams, key resources, key activities, key partners and cost structure.
Where should I start on the canvas?
With customer segments and value propositions: who you serve and what problem you solve for them. The other blocks follow from those.
What is the difference between a business model canvas and a business plan?
The canvas is a one-page summary of how the business works, quick to change and test. A business plan is a longer document with detailed forecasts.
Is my canvas saved?
Yes, in your browser only. It is never uploaded, and Start over clears it.
