CAGR Calculator

Compound annual growth rate between two values, plus end value and years needed.

About this tool

Choose what to find: the growth rate (start value, end value, years), the end value (start, rate, years) or the time needed to reach a target. The result shows CAGR, total growth, the money multiple, a Rule of 72 doubling time, and every year's value in a table.

What CAGR tells you, and what it hides

Compound annual growth rate is (end รท start)^(1 รท years) โˆ’ 1: the single yearly rate that would turn the start value into the end value if growth were perfectly smooth. It is how analysts compare a company's revenue growth over five years, how a fund's track record is quoted, and how you can judge whether a house that went from 250,000 to 400,000 in eight years (about 6.1% a year) beat the stock market. Because it compresses a bumpy path into one number, it is excellent for comparison and silent on risk: a fund that halved and recovered and one that rose steadily can share the same CAGR. It also assumes nothing was added or withdrawn โ€” for regular contributions use the retirement calculator, and to measure a portfolio with deposits use time-weighted returns. The ROI calculator compares investments, the compound interest calculator projects forward, and the inflation calculator converts the result to real terms. General information, not financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is the CAGR formula?

CAGR = (end value รท start value)^(1 รท number of years) โˆ’ 1. From 1,000 to 2,500 over 7 years: (2.5)^(1/7) โˆ’ 1 = 13.99% a year.

Is CAGR the same as average annual return?

No. The simple average of yearly returns overstates growth when returns vary; CAGR is the true compounded rate. +50% then โˆ’50% averages 0% but leaves you at 75%, a CAGR of โˆ’13.4%.

Can CAGR be negative?

Yes โ€” if the end value is below the start value, the rate is negative. A start or end value of zero has no defined CAGR.

Is anything stored?
