How many people a cake serves
Servings depend on the cake's footprint, height and how it's cut. Decorators use a standard chart for tiers about 4 inches tall. Wedding portions are slim 1 ร 2 inch slices, since cake is served after a meal; party portions are 1.5 ร 2 inches. An 8 inch round serves 24 at a wedding or 14 at a party, and a 10 inch round 38 or 28. Square tiers serve noticeably more than round tiers of the same width. A classic 6 + 8 + 10 inch round tiered cake gives about 74 wedding servings or 50 party servings. For 100 guests at party portions, 12 + 14 inch rounds give 103. Sheet cakes, usually about 2 inches tall, are worked out from their area: a 9 ร 13 inch quarter sheet gives about 29 party pieces of 2 ร 2 inches. Honest limits: charts assume neat, systematic cutting, and casual parties often cut larger slices. Couples commonly save the top tier, so many bakers add an undecorated kitchen sheet cake to stretch servings cheaply. The cake pan converter and the party food calculator are related.
