Cholesterol Ratio Calculator
Total/HDL ratio, non-HDL, LDL estimate and triglyceride ratio from a lipid test.
About this tool
Enter total cholesterol and HDL from your test results, and optionally LDL and triglycerides, in mmol/L or mg/dL. The tool shows the total/HDL ratio with its category, non-HDL cholesterol, HDL against the usual minimum for your sex, LDL and the LDL/HDL ratio, and the triglyceride/HDL ratio. If you leave LDL blank, it estimates it with the Friedewald equation. Nothing is stored.
What cholesterol ratios mean
A standard lipid test reports total cholesterol, HDL ("good" cholesterol, which carries cholesterol away from arteries), LDL ("bad") and triglycerides. Ratios combine them into a better picture of risk than total cholesterol alone. The total/HDL ratio is total divided by HDL: below 5 is desirable and below 3.5 ideal. In the example, 5.2 รท 1.3 gives 4.0. Non-HDL cholesterol (total minus HDL) counts all the particles that can clog arteries. Many guidelines now prefer it because it doesn't need fasting. A common target is under 130 mg/dL (3.4 mmol/L), and the NHS suggests 4 mmol/L or less for healthy adults. HDL should be at least 40 mg/dL (1.0 mmol/L) for men and 50 mg/dL (1.2โ1.3 mmol/L) for women. When LDL isn't measured, labs often estimate it with the Friedewald equation: LDL = total โ HDL โ triglycerides รท 5 (mg/dL) or รท 2.2 (mmol/L). It's unreliable when triglycerides exceed 400 mg/dL (4.5 mmol/L). Honest limits: ratios are one part of heart risk. Doctors use calculators such as QRISK3 or the ASCVD risk estimator, which add age, blood pressure, smoking, diabetes and family history. Not medical advice. The blood pressure checker, the BMI calculator and the waist-to-height calculator are related.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good cholesterol ratio?
A total/HDL ratio below 5 is desirable and below 3.5 is ideal.
What is non-HDL cholesterol?
Total cholesterol minus HDL: all the cholesterol carried by particles that can build up in arteries.
How is LDL calculated?
Often with the Friedewald equation: total โ HDL โ triglycerides รท 5 (mg/dL) or รท 2.2 (mmol/L).
Is my data stored?
No. Nothing is saved or sent. This isn't medical advice.
