Cocktail ABV Calculator

Strength of a mixed drink with dilution, standard drinks and units.

About this tool

Add each ingredient with its volume and ABV (mixers at 0%), choose how the drink is made, and see the final ABV, volume, pure alcohol, US standard drinks and UK units.

How strong is a cocktail?

A cocktail's ABV is the total pure alcohol divided by the final volume, and the final volume includes the water from melting ice. That's why the method matters: stirring with ice typically adds about 20โ€“25% water, shaking 25โ€“30%, building over ice around 15% and blending more. The alcohol in each ingredient is its volume ร— its ABV. A Negroni of 30 ml each of gin (40%), Campari (25%) and sweet vermouth (16%) contains 12 + 7.5 + 4.8 = 24.3 ml of alcohol in 90 ml, 27% before dilution and about 22% once stirred. That's about 1.4 US standard drinks (14 g of alcohol each) or 2.4 UK units (10 ml or 8 g each). Bartenders use this to balance recipes and write menus, and drinkers can use it to pace themselves: a spirit-forward cocktail often holds as much alcohol as two beers. Honest limits: dilution varies with ice size, temperature and technique, and liqueur and vermouth strengths vary by brand, so check the bottles. This is an estimate of a drink's strength, not of how intoxicated anyone will be. Drink responsibly, and never drink and drive. The ABV calculator and the party food calculator are related.
