Salary Counter Offer Letter

A polite salary negotiation email with your number and reasons.

About this tool

Enter the company, job title, the salary offered and the figure you want. Add two or three reasons (experience, published pay for the role and area, scarce skills) and any non-salary asks, such as flexible working or extra holiday. The tool writes a warm or formal email and shows how much more you're asking for, in money and as a percentage. The draft is saved in your browser.

How to negotiate a job offer

Many employers expect candidates to negotiate, and a polite, well-reasoned counter rarely costs you the offer. First, research pay for the role, level and location using published salary surveys, job ads and recruiters. Then decide on one specific number rather than a range, because a range invites them to pick the bottom. In the example, a Β£52,000 offer and a Β£58,000 target is Β£6,000 more, an 11.5% increase, inside the typical 5–15% range for a counter. Open with thanks and enthusiasm, give your figure, and back it with two or three concrete reasons focused on the value you bring, not on personal costs. If salary is fixed, ask about other things: a signing bonus, an earlier pay review, more holiday, flexible or remote working, training budget or a better job title. Saying you'll accept at your number is powerful, but only if you mean it. Many negotiations happen by phone, so offer a call, and get the final package in writing before resigning from your current job. Honest limits: this isn't legal or financial advice, and norms vary by country, sector and seniority. The job offer comparison calculator, the salary converter and the pay raise calculator are related, and Gross vs net salary: what comes off your pay, and how to compare offers explains take-home pay.
