Duplicate Word Finder

Catch doubled words like β€œthe the”, fix them, and spot close repeats.

About this tool

Paste your text and doubled words are highlighted, even when the second copy starts a new line. Press Fix all doubled words to remove the extra copies. Common intentional doubles such as "had had" and "that that" are skipped unless you ask for them. Below the text, words of four or more letters used several times within a set distance are listed, so you can vary your wording. Nothing is stored.

Why doubled words slip through

Doubled words are among the most common typos in edited writing, and among the hardest to see. When you read, your brain predicts the next word and skips the repeat, especially when the first copy ends one line and the second starts the next. Spell checkers often miss them because each word is spelled correctly. This tool looks for the same word twice in a row, ignoring case, so "The the" is caught too. Some doubles are correct: "I had had enough", "He said that that was fine", "bye bye". Those are ignored by default. A second check looks for close repetition: the same meaningful word several times within a few sentences, such as "design" three times in the example. That isn't an error, but it can make writing feel clumsy, so consider a synonym or restructuring the sentence. Common short words are ignored. Honest limits: the tool only finds exact repeats. It doesn't check spelling or grammar, and some repetition is deliberate for rhythm, emphasis or clarity, so keep the ones that work. The word frequency counter, the filler word remover and the readability checker are related.
