Flooring Calculator

Boxes of laminate, vinyl or wood for several rooms, with waste, underlay and skirting.

About this tool

Add each room as length ร— width, splitting L-shaped rooms into rectangles. Choose the laying pattern, enter the coverage printed on the box and the price per square metre or square foot, and enter the width of doorways. The calculator shows the floor area, the amount to order with waste, the number of boxes, the cost, the underlay area and the length of skirting or baseboard.

How much flooring to buy

Start with the floor area, then add an allowance for cuts at the walls and offcuts that cannot be reused. About 10% covers a straight lay, 15% a diagonal lay and 20% herringbone or chevron, which waste more at every edge. Round up to whole boxes using the coverage on the box. A 4.2 ร— 3.6 m living room and a 2.8 ร— 1.2 m hallway come to 18.48 mยฒ. With 10% waste you need 20.33 mยฒ, which is 10 boxes of 2.22 mยฒ, or 22.2 mยฒ in total. At 18 per mยฒ that costs 399.60. Underlay covers the same area, and skirting runs around the perimeter minus doorways, 22.8 m here. Honest limits: buy all boxes from one batch, keep a spare box for future repairs, and leave wood and laminate in the room for about 48 hours before fitting so they can adjust to its temperature and humidity. The tile calculator handles tiles and grout, the area calculator measures irregular rooms and the paint calculator plans the walls.

Frequently asked questions

How much extra flooring should I buy?

About 10% for a straight lay, 15% for diagonal and 20% for herringbone or chevron patterns.

How do I measure an L-shaped room?

Split it into two rectangles, add each as a separate room and the calculator adds them together.
