GIF to Video

Convert an animated GIF to an MP4 or WebM video.

About this tool

Drop in a GIF, choose how many times it plays, a background colour for transparent areas and a maximum size, then convert it. The video is recorded in your browser and downloaded.

Why turn a GIF into a video

Video codecs compress animation far better than the GIF format, so a video version is often a fraction of the size and plays more smoothly. Many places also prefer or require video: Instagram and TikTok don't accept GIF uploads, presentation software handles video more reliably, and some messaging services convert GIFs anyway. This tool plays your GIF onto a canvas and records it with the browser's built-in recorder. It makes MP4 in browsers that can record it (Safari, and recent Chrome and Edge) and WebM elsewhere (Firefox). Short GIFs make very short clips, so you can play the animation up to 20 times; video has no transparency, so transparent areas get the background colour you pick; and dimensions are rounded to even numbers, which video encoders need. Honest limits: recording runs in real time, so a 10-second video takes 10 seconds; frame timing follows the browser's GIF playback, which is close but not frame-exact; and the tab should stay visible while it records. Video to GIF goes the other way, and the video compressor can shrink the result further.

Frequently asked questions

Will the video be smaller than the GIF?

Usually yes, often much smaller, because video codecs compress animation far better.

Do I get MP4 or WebM?

MP4 where your browser can record it (Safari, recent Chrome and Edge) and WebM otherwise (Firefox).

Why does conversion take as long as the video?

The GIF is played and recorded in real time, so the time taken matches the video length.

What happens to transparent parts?

Video has no transparency, so they're filled with the background colour you choose.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and processed in your browser on this device; nothing is uploaded or stored.
