Golf Handicap Calculator

World Handicap System index from your rounds, plus a course handicap.

About this tool

Enter one round per line, oldest first: adjusted gross score, course rating and slope rating, with an optional playing conditions calculation (PCC). The calculator turns each round into a score differential, averages the right number of best differentials into a Handicap Index and ticks the rounds it used. Enter today's tee slope, course rating and par for your course handicap.

How the World Handicap System works

Since 2020, golfers worldwide use the World Handicap System. Each round becomes a score differential: (113 รท slope rating) ร— (adjusted gross score โˆ’ course rating โˆ’ PCC), rounded to one decimal. The slope adjusts for how much harder the course plays for a higher-handicap golfer, with 113 as average. Your Handicap Index is the average of the best 8 differentials from your most recent 20 rounds. With fewer rounds, a smaller number is used: the best 1 of 3 minus 2.0, the best 1 of 4 minus 1.0, the best 2 of 6 minus 1.0, up to the best 7 of 19. The maximum index is 54.0. To play, convert it to a course handicap: Index ร— slope รท 113 + (course rating โˆ’ par), rounded. With the eight sample rounds, the best two differentials, 15.3 and 16.0, average to an index of 15.7 and a course handicap of 17 from a tee rated 71.2 with a slope of 128. Honest limits: this is unofficial. Your national association also applies net double bogey score adjustments, soft and hard caps and exceptional-score reductions. The scoreboard keeps match scores and the average calculator handles other averages.

A number from 55 to 155 showing how much harder a course is for a bogey golfer than a scratch golfer; 113 is average.
