Ideal Weight Calculator
Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi formulas side by side, plus the healthy BMI range.
About this tool
Choose male or female, metric or imperial, and enter your height. The tool shows the result of each of the four classic ideal-body-weight formulas, the range they agree on, and the weight range that gives a BMI of 18.5โ24.9 for that height. Nothing is stored.
Where the formulas come from, and their limits
All four formulas start from a base weight at five feet (152.4 cm) and add a fixed amount per inch above it: Devine (1974) uses 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch for men and 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg for women; Robinson and Miller (both 1983) refitted the numbers to population data; Hamwi (1964) is the oldest and steepest. For a 175 cm man they give roughly 69โ72 kg, which is why they are quoted together as a band. Context matters: Devine's formula was published to calculate medicine doses, not to tell anyone what they should weigh, and none of the four considers muscle mass, frame size, age or ethnicity โ an athlete can be well above them and healthy. The healthy-BMI range (18.5โ24.9) is the screening range used by the WHO and national health services, with the same caveats about muscle. Below five feet the formulas subtract and become unreliable; use the BMI range there. General information, not medical advice. The BMI calculator gives your current BMI, the body fat calculator estimates composition (How body fat percentage is estimated โ and how much to trust each method explains the methods), and the calorie calculator sets an intake; How daily calorie needs are calculated โ BMR, activity multipliers and what a deficit means covers the maths.
Frequently asked questions
What is my ideal weight?
For a given height the four formulas usually agree within a few kilograms; the BMI 18.5โ24.9 range is wider. Treat both as a rough guide, not a target โ muscle, frame and age all matter.
Which ideal weight formula is the most accurate?
None is accurate for an individual. Robinson and Miller were fitted to population data; Devine is the most widely used in medicine, for drug dosing.
Why are the results different for men and women?
The formulas use different base weights and slopes for men and women, reflecting average differences in body composition at the same height.
Is my data saved?
No. Height and results are calculated in your browser and nothing is stored or sent.
