Web App Manifest Generator
manifest.json for a PWA with icons, colours and display mode, plus checks.
About this tool
Fill in the app's name and short name, a description, the start URL, scope and id, the display mode and orientation, the theme and background colours, and the icons. Write each icon on its own line as "path | WxH | purpose". The manifest builds as formatted JSON, with the tags to add to your page's head, a rough splash-screen preview and a checklist for installability. Copy it or download it as manifest.json.
What a web app manifest does
A web app manifest is the JSON file that lets browsers install a website as an app, called a progressive web app or PWA. It sets the name and the short name shown under the home-screen icon, the icons, the page that opens first, and whether the app opens in its own window (standalone) or in a normal browser tab. It also sets the colours of the title bar and the splash screen. To be installable in Chrome and Edge, a site needs HTTPS, a manifest with a name, a start URL, a standalone, fullscreen or minimal-ui display, and icons of at least 192 and 512 pixels. A maskable icon has its logo inside a safe zone, so Android can crop it into a circle or squircle without cutting it off. Keep the short name to about 12 characters so it is not truncated. Link the manifest from every page and check it in your browser's developer tools under Application, then Manifest. Honest limits: iOS reads only part of the manifest and still uses the apple-touch-icon, and working offline needs a service worker too. The favicon generator makes the icon files, the colour converter converts the theme colour and the JSON formatter validates the result. App icon sizes explained: every size, and why there are so many lists icon sizes.
Frequently asked questions
What icon sizes does a web app manifest need?
At least 192 ร 192 and 512 ร 512 pixels. A 512-pixel maskable icon is recommended for Android.
What is the difference between name and short_name?
name is the full app name used on install prompts and splash screens. short_name is shown under the home-screen icon, so keep it to about 12 characters.
Should the file be manifest.json or site.webmanifest?
Either works. Browsers read whatever file the link tag points to; serve it with the application/manifest+json type if you can.
Is my data saved?
No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is stored or sent.
