Moving Boxes Calculator
How many boxes, tape rolls and packing paper you need for a move.
About this tool
Choose your home size, the number of people and how much stuff you have, from minimalist to lots. The calculator estimates small, medium, large and wardrobe boxes, rolls of packing tape, packing paper, bubble wrap and an approximate load volume in cubic metres and cubic feet, which helps when booking a van or a removal company.
How many boxes you need to move house
Moving guides and removal firms base box counts on the number of rooms, then adjust for the people living there and how much they own. A two-bedroom home for two people with an average amount of belongings typically needs around 70 boxes. Use small boxes for heavy things like books, tins and tools, so they stay liftable, and medium boxes for most kitchen items, toys and electronics. Large boxes are for light, bulky things such as bedding, cushions and lampshades, and wardrobe boxes let hanging clothes travel on a rail. Allow one roll of tape for about every dozen boxes, plenty of packing paper for crockery and glass, and bubble wrap for fragile items. Label each box with its room and contents on two sides. The volume estimate is a rough guide for choosing a van, and removal firms usually survey or ask for an inventory to confirm. Honest limits: every home is different, and a garage, loft or a large book collection can easily double the count, so buy a few extra. Many suppliers take unused boxes back. The packing list, the checklist maker and the volume calculator help plan the move.
