Choosing manuscript paper

Manuscript paper comes in a few standard forms. Five-line staves are used for most instruments and voices, and a page usually holds about 10โ€“12. Grand staves pair a treble and bass staff for piano, harp and organ, joined at the left. Guitar TAB has six lines, one for each string with the lowest at the bottom, and bass TAB four. Single-line staves suit unpitched percussion and rhythm exercises. Staff size is measured from the top line to the bottom line. About 7 mm suits everyday writing, 9 mm is easier for young students and beginners, and 5.5 mm fits more music on a page. The tool spaces the systems evenly down an A4-proportioned page with barlines at each end, and can label each line with a treble or bass clef or 'TAB'. Honest limits: clef symbols use musical characters from your device's fonts, which some systems don't include, so leave labels off for plain staves. When printing on US Letter, choose 'fit to page'. The graph paper generator and the guitar chord chart are related.
