Paver Calculator
Pavers for a patio or path, plus sub-base, sand and edging.
About this tool
Enter the area's length and width, the paver size and joint gap, the waste allowance and the depths of sub-base and sand. The tool shows how many pavers to buy, the volumes and approximate weights of base and sand, and the edging length.
Planning a paved area
Each paver effectively covers its own size plus half the joint on each side, so the count is area รท ((length + gap) ร (width + gap)). A 4 ร 3 m patio in 200 ร 100 mm block pavers with 3 mm joints needs about 574, so with 5% extra for cuts and breakages, order 603. Allow 10% or more for herringbone or diagonal patterns and curved edges. Below the pavers goes a compacted sub-base of crushed stone (MOT Type 1 in the UK, crusher run or road base in the US): about 100 mm (4 in) for paths and patios, 150โ200 mm for driveways and soft ground. On top sits a bedding layer of sharp sand, usually 25โ40 mm. The tool estimates their volumes and weights using typical densities of about 2.1 tonnes per mยณ for compacted stone and 1.6 for sand, and the length of edge restraint needed around the perimeter. Honest limits: densities vary with material and moisture, so order a little extra base to allow for compaction; driveways and clay or wet soils may need a deeper base or a membrane. Not building advice. The gravel calculator and the concrete calculator are related.
Frequently asked questions
How many pavers do I need per square metre?
For 200 ร 100 mm pavers with 3 mm joints, about 48 per mยฒ; divide 1 by the paver's area including the gap.
How deep should the base be under pavers?
About 100 mm (4 in) of compacted crushed stone for patios and paths, and 150 to 200 mm for driveways.
How much sand goes under pavers?
A bedding layer of about 25 to 40 mm (1 to 1.5 in) of sharp sand.
How much extra should I order?
5% for straight patterns, 10% or more for herringbone, diagonal layouts or curves.
