About this tool
Choose a root, a chord type and an inversion. The chord is highlighted on a three-octave keyboard with each note labelled, alongside its symbol, notes and formula. Play it as a chord or an arpeggio.
Building piano chords
Every chord is a formula of scale degrees applied to a root. A major triad is 1 3 5 (C E G), minor 1 ♭3 5 (C E♭ G), diminished 1 ♭3 ♭5 and augmented 1 3 ♯5. Sevenths add a fourth note: dominant 7th 1 3 5 ♭7, major 7th 1 3 5 7, minor 7th 1 ♭3 5 ♭7, half-diminished 1 ♭3 ♭5 ♭7, and diminished 7th 1 ♭3 ♭5 𝄫7. Ninth chords add the 9th, an octave above the 2nd. The tool spells notes the way theory requires, so C minor shows E♭ (not D♯) and A♭ half-diminished shows C♭ and E𝄫. Inversions put a chord tone other than the root in the bass: first inversion C major is E G C (written C/E), second inversion G C E. Inversions keep the hands close together when moving between chords. Eighteen chord types are covered in all keys. Honest limits: the keyboard shows close position; pianists often spread voicings or drop notes such as the 5th. The virtual piano and the guitar chord chart are related.
