Rubric Maker
Build, score and print a grading rubric with criteria and levels.
About this tool
Start from the sample persuasive essay rubric and edit everything: the title, criteria, level names, points and the description in each cell. Add or remove criteria and levels, from two to six. To score a piece of work, click select in the level that fits each criterion; the total and percentage update as you go. Print a clean copy, with the chosen levels shaded, or copy the rubric as a table to paste into a document or spreadsheet.
How to write a good rubric
A rubric is a scoring guide that lists the criteria being assessed down the side, the levels of performance across the top, and a description in each cell of what that level looks like. Analytic rubrics like this one score each criterion separately, which gives students specific feedback and makes marking more consistent between teachers and over time. Good rubrics have three to six criteria that match the learning goals, such as argument, evidence, organisation and mechanics for an essay, so each one is distinct. Use three to five levels with clear labels and points, for example Excellent 4, Good 3, Developing 2 and Beginning 1. Write descriptors that are specific and observable, describing what's present rather than just saying "good" or "poor", and keep the language parallel across a row so the differences between levels are obvious. Share the rubric with students before they start, so they know what quality looks like and can assess their own drafts. Honest limits: this rubric isn't saved, so print or copy it before you close the page, and it doesn't weight criteria differently; to weight one, give its levels higher points or include it twice. The test grade calculator, the grade calculator and the GPA calculator help with the rest of the marking.
