The metrics investors and operators ask for
Subscription businesses live on a handful of numbers. Monthly recurring revenue and its growth say how big and how fast; customer churn (customers lost รท customers at the start) and revenue churn (lost plus downgraded MRR รท starting MRR) say how leaky; net revenue retention says whether existing customers grow โ above 100% means expansion outweighs churn, the hallmark of the best SaaS companies. Lifetime value here is ARPA ร gross margin รท monthly churn, CAC is sales and marketing spend รท new customers, and the classic health checks are LTV:CAC of at least 3:1 and CAC payback under 12 months. Honest notes: one month is noisy, so average a quarter; an LTV built on an unusually low churn month is wildly optimistic; and companies define these slightly differently, so state your formulas in a board deck. The startup runway calculator turns the revenue line into months of cash, the subscription tracker shows the customer's side of a recurring bill, the A/B test calculator checks pricing experiments, and the break-even calculator covers the fixed costs.
Frequently asked questions
How is LTV calculated?
Average revenue per account per month ร gross margin รท monthly customer churn. With ARPA 80, 80% margin and 3% churn: 80 ร 0.8 รท 0.03 โ 2,133.
What is a good LTV to CAC ratio?
3:1 is the usual target. Below 1:1 you lose money on each customer; far above 5:1 can mean you are under-investing in growth.
What is net revenue retention?
Starting MRR plus expansion minus contraction minus churned MRR, divided by starting MRR. Over 100% means the existing customer base grows on its own.
