Sod Calculator

Turf rolls and pallets for a lawn of rectangles and circles.

About this tool

Add each part of your lawn as a rectangle, circle or triangle with its dimensions. Enter the area of one roll and one pallet from your supplier and a waste allowance; the tool totals the area and shows the rolls, pallets and approximate weight.

Ordering turf

Measure the lawn as simple shapes: rectangles (length Γ— width), circles (Ο€ Γ— radiusΒ², from the diameter) and triangles (Β½ Γ— base Γ— height), and add them up. A 10 Γ— 6 m lawn plus a 3 m circular area is about 67 mΒ². Turf is sold in rolls whose size varies by supplier and country. UK turf usually comes in 1 mΒ² rolls; US sod in rolls or slabs of about 10 sq ft (2 Γ— 5 ft), or big rolls for machines. Pallets typically carry 40–60 mΒ² or 400–500 sq ft. Add 5% for trimming around edges, beds and paths, or 10% for curved or awkward shapes. With 5%, the example needs 71 one-metre rolls, about 1.4 pallets. Freshly cut turf is heavy, around 15–20 kg per mΒ² depending on soil and moisture, so plan delivery access and lifting. Prepare and level the soil before delivery, lay the turf within a day, staggering the joints like brickwork, and water thoroughly. Honest limits: roll and pallet sizes and weights vary, so use your supplier's figures. The grass seed calculator and the area calculator are related.
