How State Pension age is changing

State Pension age is the earliest age you can claim the UK State Pension. Under current law it is 66 for people born between 6 October 1954 and 5 April 1960. It then rises month by month to 67 for people born between 6 April 1960 and 5 March 1961, with the change taking effect between 2026 and 2028. Someone born on 14 July 1960, for example, reaches it at 66 years and 4 months, on 14 November 2026. It is 67 for everyone born from 6 March 1961 to 5 April 1977. The Pensions Act 2007 then phases in 68: people born between 6 April 1977 and 5 April 1978 reach State Pension age on fixed dates between May 2044 and March 2046, and anyone born on or after 6 April 1978 reaches it at 68. The government reviews the timetable regularly and could bring the rise to 68 forward, so treat later dates as subject to change. Reaching State Pension age doesn't mean you have to stop working, and you can defer your claim to get a higher weekly amount. How much you receive depends on your National Insurance record: normally 35 qualifying years for the full new State Pension and at least 10 years for any.
