Tip Pool Calculator

Share pooled tips by hours, role points or equally, with cash rounding.

About this tool

Enter the total tips and each person's name and hours, and choose how to split them: by hours, by points multiplied by hours, or equally. Optionally round each share down to a coin or note size for cash payouts. Each person's share appears next to their name, with the tips per hour and any amount left over after rounding, ready to copy.

How tip pooling works

Tip pooling collects tips from a shift or a week and shares them among the team. Splitting by hours is the most common method: each person receives the pool multiplied by their hours and divided by everyone's hours. In the example, 840 shared over 126 hours is about 6.67 an hour, so someone who worked 32 hours gets about 213.33. Points systems weight roles, for example 1 point for servers and bartenders and 0.5 for support staff, then multiply by hours, so front-of-house staff receive a larger share of each hour. Rounding down to a coin or note makes cash payouts quicker. The leftover is shown so it can be carried into the next pool rather than disappearing. Whatever method you use, write it down and apply it consistently so everyone can check their share. Honest limits: tip pooling is regulated in many places. For example, owners and managers are often barred from sharing in it, and some countries set rules on how tips paid by card must be passed on. Check local law and employment contracts. Not legal advice. The tip calculator, the expense splitter and the timesheet calculator are related.

Frequently asked questions

How do you split tips by hours worked?

Divide the total tips by the total hours to get a rate per hour, then multiply by each person's hours.

What is a tip point system?

Each role gets a weight, such as 1 for servers and 0.5 for support staff, which is multiplied by hours to set each person's share.

Can managers take part in a tip pool?

In many places, no. Laws often bar owners and managers from tip pools, so check your local rules.
