About this tool
Enter your annual salary, where you live, your pension contribution and type, and your student loan plan if you have one. The calculator shows take-home pay per month in large type, with a table of gross pay, pension, income tax, National Insurance, student loan and net pay per year, month and week, plus your personal allowance and the tax bands applied.
How UK income tax and National Insurance work
Most UK employees get a tax-free personal allowance of £12,570. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, income above that is taxed at 20% up to £50,270, 40% up to £125,140 and 45% above. The allowance shrinks by £1 for every £2 earned over £100,000, which creates an effective 60% rate between £100,000 and £125,140. These thresholds have been frozen since 2021 and still apply in 2026/27, so pay rises push more income into higher bands, sometimes called fiscal drag. Scotland sets its own rates for non-savings income, with six bands from 19% to 48%. Employee National Insurance is charged at 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% above. A salary of £35,000 with a 5% pension contribution and no student loan takes home about £2,277 a month. Pension contributions made through salary sacrifice also reduce National Insurance, while net-pay and relief-at-source schemes reduce income tax only. Student loan repayments are 9% of income above your plan's threshold, or 6% for postgraduate loans. Honest limits: this assumes a standard 1257L tax code and a single job. It ignores bonuses, benefits in kind, other income, the Marriage Allowance and tax refunds, uses 2025/26 Scottish bands, which change most years, and is an estimate rather than your payslip. Not financial advice. The salary converter converts hourly and yearly pay, the student loan calculator projects repayments and the pay rise calculator shows a raise's effect. Gross vs net salary: what comes off your pay, and how to compare offers explains the difference.
