About this tool
Enter headcount at the start and end of a period, the number of leavers and how many left voluntarily, the number of months, the average salary and the cost to replace someone as a percentage of salary. You'll see the turnover rate, the annualised rate, the voluntary and involuntary rates, retention and the estimated cost.
Measuring and reducing turnover
Employee turnover is the percentage of staff who leave in a period: leavers divided by average headcount, which is (start + end) รท 2, times 100. For example, 18 leavers with headcount moving from 120 to 128 (average 124) is 14.5% for the year. For a shorter period, annualise the rate to compare it with yearly benchmarks. Splitting voluntary leavers (resignations, retirements) from involuntary ones (dismissals, redundancies) is important. Rising voluntary turnover usually points to pay, management, workload, career progression or culture, and exit interviews and stay surveys help pinpoint which. Retention is the other side: the share of people employed at the start who are still there at the end, 85% here. Turnover is expensive. Recruitment fees and advertising, interviewing time, onboarding and training, lost productivity while a role is empty and the new starter gets up to speed typically add up to 15โ50% of a salary, more for senior or specialist roles. At 30%, 18 leavers on ยฃ42,000 cost about ยฃ227,000 a year. Honest limits: benchmarks vary hugely by sector (hospitality and retail are far higher than the public sector) and by country. For a clean figure, exclude temporary contracts and internal transfers. The Bradford factor calculator, the FTE calculator and the employee cost calculator are related.
