About this tool
Choose self-only or family coverage, your age and the months you'll have a high-deductible health plan this year. Enter your contribution, any employer contribution and your tax rates, plus your current balance, yearly medical spending and years to 65. You'll see your limit, how much you can still add, the tax saved this year and a projected balance at 65.
Why HSAs are so tax-efficient
A Health Savings Account (HSA) is available if you're covered by a high-deductible health plan (HDHP). It has a triple tax advantage. Contributions are deductible, or skip income tax, Social Security and Medicare entirely when made through payroll. Growth is tax-free, and withdrawals for qualified medical expenses are tax-free too. For 2026 you can contribute up to $4,400 with self-only coverage or $8,750 with family coverage, plus a $1,000 catch-up from age 55. Employer contributions count towards those limits, and the limit is pro-rated if you're only covered for part of the year (unless you use the last-month rule). For example, contributing $4,400 through payroll in the 22% federal bracket with 5% state tax saves about $1,525. The money never expires and stays yours if you change jobs. Many people treat an HSA as an extra retirement account: they pay smaller medical bills out of pocket, invest the HSA balance, keep receipts and reimburse themselves tax-free years later. After 65, withdrawals for anything else are taxed like a traditional IRA, with no penalty. Before 65, non-medical withdrawals are taxed and carry a 20% penalty. Honest limits: California and New Jersey don't give state tax relief on HSAs, and investment returns aren't guaranteed. This isn't tax advice. The 401(k) calculator, the Roth IRA calculator and the paycheck calculator are related.
