Roth IRA Calculator
Your 2026 Roth IRA limit after the income phase-out, and tax-free growth.
About this tool
Enter your modified adjusted gross income, filing status and age, your current Roth balance, planned yearly contribution, retirement age, expected return and the tax drag a regular account would suffer. You'll see your allowed 2026 contribution, the projected tax-free balance and how much more it's worth than the same investments in a taxable account.
How Roth IRAs work
Roth IRA contributions are made with money you've already paid tax on. In return, investment growth is tax-free and qualified withdrawals in retirement (after age 59ยฝ, once the account is five years old) are completely tax-free. For 2026 the limit is $7,500, or $8,600 from age 50, but you can't contribute more than your earned income. The amount you're allowed phases out between $153,000 and $168,000 of modified AGI for single and head-of-household filers, and between $242,000 and $252,000 for married couples filing jointly. In between, it's reduced proportionally and rounded up to the next $10. For example, a single filer with $160,000 of MAGI can contribute $4,000. Above the range, many people make a non-deductible traditional IRA contribution and convert it, the so-called backdoor Roth, though the pro-rata rule applies if they hold other pre-tax IRAs. Contributing $7,500 a year for 30 years at 7% grows to about $758,000, all of it tax-free. Roths suit people who expect the same or a higher tax rate in retirement, and there are no required minimum distributions for the original owner. Your contributions, but not earnings, can be withdrawn at any time. Honest limits: returns aren't guaranteed, the limits and phase-outs change yearly, and the five-year and conversion rules have nuances. This isn't financial or tax advice. The 401(k) calculator, the HSA calculator and the compound interest calculator are related.
