How to get faster at mental maths
Mental arithmetic gets faster with fluency: recalling facts such as 7 × 8 = 56 instantly instead of working them out. Short, timed practice is one of the most effective ways to build fluency, because it rewards recall and shows progress clearly. The four levels cover different skills. Easy mixes addition and subtraction within 20, the foundation of number bonds. Medium adds two-digit addition and subtraction and the times tables. Hard includes larger products and exact division with two-digit numbers. Times tables drills multiplication facts from 2 to 12 and their matching divisions, which come out exactly. Useful strategies include breaking numbers apart (47 + 38 is 47 + 30 + 8), compensating (99 × 6 is 600 − 6), doubling and halving (16 × 25 is 8 × 50), and learning square numbers as anchors. Aim to beat your best by one or two answers a day rather than practising for a long time once a week; a few minutes daily builds lasting recall. Honest limits: subtraction answers are never negative, and timings partly reflect typing speed on your device, so compare your scores on the same device. Your bests stay in this browser.
