Number Line Generator

Printable number lines with decimals, negatives or fractions.

About this tool

Set the start, end and step (such as 1, 0.5 or 1/4), add minor ticks if you want them, choose how many lines per sheet and how the labels appear, then print the sheet and answer key.

Number lines in maths teaching

The number line is one of the most useful models in primary and lower-secondary maths. It shows order and magnitude, makes adding and subtracting visible as jumps, and shows where negative numbers, decimals and fractions sit between whole numbers. Set any range and step. A step of 1/4 from 0 to 2 labels ticks 0, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1 1/4 and so on, simplified automatically; 0.1 steps suit decimal work; and โˆ’10 to 10 suits negatives and temperature. Add minor ticks between labelled marks for estimation and rounding. For exercises, label only the ends, leave every label blank, or blank out a random selection for pupils to fill in, then print the matching answer key. The sheet number reprints the same blanks for a whole class. Up to eight lines fit on a sheet. Honest limits: each line holds up to 200 ticks, so very long ranges need a bigger step. Very small steps get crowded when printed, so try splitting the range across several lines. The maths worksheet generator and the fraction calculator are related.
