About this tool

Add supporting benefits, your main competitor or alternative, and what makes you different. You get a homepage-style headline, a sub-headline, benefit bullets and an internal positioning statement. The status line checks the headline is under 10 words. The draft is saved in your browser.

How to write a value proposition

A value proposition answers the question every visitor asks: "Why should I choose this over what I do now?" It has three parts. The headline states the outcome the customer gets, such as "A fair staff rota in five minutes". It should be short (under 10 words) and about them, not you. The sub-headline explains what the product is and who it's for. The benefit bullets back up the promise with specifics. Behind the scenes, a positioning statement keeps your team aligned. Geoffrey Moore's template from Crossing the Chasm is "For [target customer] who [need], [product] is a [category] that [benefit]. Unlike [alternative], we [difference]." It's meant for internal use, not for your homepage. Strong propositions are specific, focused on outcomes and believable. Borrow phrases from customer reviews and sales calls, because customers describe their problems better than marketers do. Then test: show the headline to people in your target market for five seconds and ask what the product does. Honest limits: the tool structures your thinking; it can't tell you whether customers actually want the benefit. The slogan generator, the mission statement generator and the product description generator are related.
