How to use the word counter

Paste a draft and see word count, character count (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs, and a plain-English reading time. Writers, students, and social captions all hit limits; this page is the tape measure.

  1. Paste or type

Counts update as you type. Nothing is sent anywhere.

  2. Check limits

Use character count for bios and SMS, word count for essays, and reading time for speeches.

About this tool

Platform limits are awkward (X, Instagram bios, college portals). Count first, then edit. If you also need styled Unicode, generate it after you are inside the limit — fancy characters still count as characters.

Frequently asked questions

How do you count words?
We split on whitespace after trimming. Sequences of letters, numbers, and inner punctuation (like don’t) count as one word.
What reading speed do you assume?
About 200 words per minute, a common silent-reading average. Speeches are often closer to 130–150 wpm — budget extra time if you will read aloud.
