How to use the movie genre wheel

The hardest part of film night is not choosing a film — it is choosing what kind of film. Spin for a genre first and the shortlist collapses from everything ever made to a handful of options everyone can live with.

  1. Spin

Click the wheel or press Space. One spin gives you the genre; the argument about which film within it is a much shorter argument.

  2. Read the result

The winning slice is chosen with the browser’s cryptographic random number generator before the animation starts, so the spin plays out a decision that has already been made fairly.

  3. Edit, share, or project it

The list stays editable — add, remove, or reorder lines and the wheel redraws. Copy the share link to send your version to someone else, or go fullscreen so the wheel is readable across a room.

About this tool

Choice paralysis at the end of a long day is real: the more options a service shows, the longer people scroll and the less they enjoy what they finally pick. Narrowing by genre first is a cheap way to cut the search space before anyone opens an app.

A house rule that works: the wheel picks the genre, the person who complained loudest picks the film within it. Complaints drop noticeably.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add streaming services or specific films instead?
Yes. Replace the list with actual titles, or with the services you subscribe to, and spin for that instead.
Someone hates horror. Can I drop a genre?
Delete that line from the list before spinning. Whatever is not on the wheel cannot be picked.
Does the wheel remember my genres?
Not on our side — nothing is stored on a server. Copy the share link and the list travels in the URL, so you can bookmark your own version.
