Blackletter dominated European printing for centuries before roman type took over, so it carries an automatic sense of age. That association is doing all the work when it appears on a modern profile.
Because the shapes are dense and unfamiliar, small-screen legibility is poor. A gothic username is fine; a gothic bio is a wall nobody reads.
Frequently asked questions
- Is gothic the same as Old English text?
- Close enough in everyday use. Both are blackletter styles; fraktur is the German branch and what Unicode encodes. The distinction matters to typographers and to nobody else.
- Why do a few capitals look unusual?
- Several fraktur capitals (โญ, โ, โ, โ, โจ) were added to Unicode before the main block, so they come from a separate range. They are the correct characters, just from a different neighbourhood.
- Is it hard to read?
- Yes, deliberately. Blackletter is slow to read even at full size. Use it for one or two words, never for a paragraph.
